Discover Miltonduff 10: Speyside Whisky

Miltonduff Distillery, located just south of Elgin in the iconic Speyside region, is renowned for producing sweet, grassy and floral single malts with a hint of spice.

Established in 1824 by Andrew Peary and Robert Bain, Miltonduff distillery stands on the site of Pluscarden Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, whose mill is believed to have once produced the area’s very first whisky. While independent bottlings like this one are few, they fully showcase the remarkable character of this light, floral and elegant malt.

Fun Fact

The distillery draws its water from the Black Burn, which was blessed by an abbot in the 15th century and was likely used by monks to make an early form of whisky - known then as aqua vitae or the ‘water of life’. This deep connection to monastic traditions gives Miltonduff a fascinating link to Scotland’s historical roots in whisky production.

A powerful, complex and highly enjoyable dram

Whoo, powerful and sweet on the nose inviting me in to a blend of banana and apple pie. On the palate it is viscous with caramel and stewed apples. The finish I found complex and lasting with caramelised fruit along with a blend of honey and marmalade.
Adding a drop of water opened up the flavours but did not lessen this enjoyable complex dram. Excellent.

Miltonduff, what a belter of a dram right enough

After really enjoying Epic Drams inaugural release of Linkwood (just gorgeous), I couldn't wait to sample the next release, Miltonduff. And I wasn't disappointed. Another gorgeous dram, lovely nose and palate, sweet, lemony and with another long finish, full of flavour.
Now looking towards the next release, Glen Elgin.

wow, way better than expected!

Definitely tasting vanilla and caramel right away, with a nice spicy kick on the finish. Packs quite a hit at 60% but goes down surprisingly smooth for the strength.
